I was Slink Rand's guitar tech/roadie for a time back in the late 70's, and we all spent a lot of time together, on the road and in Champaign. I started a family and moved to Texas in 1980, and lost touch with everyone over the years. With the passage of time, my memories of those days led me to try to reconnect with old friends through this thing called the internet. I was only able to locate Peter's phone number, and I called him out of the blue one evening 5 or 6 years ago. We had a wonderful, long conversation. It was great to talk to him again after almost 30 years!
I stumbled across this page late last night, after coming home from a gig. I was trying to find a picture of Keiths' (Slink) old Flying V for a friend. I had to read the words a few times before it sank in, that Pete had passed away. As I'm typing this morning I still have a lump in my throat. I'm deeply saddened though I know he's in a better place. ........play on "Pops"

Hi Mary. My husband Jeff and I met you at Zanies Comedey Club. Thought I would check out your website. Your site is designed fantasticly. Your husband seemed like a great man. Looking through the pictures I seen a happy person who was surrounded by love. He seemed to be a very talented bassist. I enjoyed this peek into your wonderful lives you shared together. Thanks for inviting us! I think it is really awesome what you are doing! Have a HAPPY New Year!!! Peace Love & Light!

Peter's bass lines drew me back to Mabel's like a moth to a flame everytime Clockwork played back in the late 80's and early 90's. I was lucky to have been a U of I student at that time, and even luckier to have met Peter and sit down for a few lessons with him. He inspired me to pick up the bass, and I have not put it down a single day since, more than 20 years later.

This morning, when I picked up my axe, a Clockwork bass line was coming "up and out" of me...it inspired me to search for and find this site. I am just learning of Peter's passing, and sort of reeling from it, to be honest. I regret not finding this site sooner, to let that guy know that his inspiration and energy live on through my own playing...clear out here in Las Vegas. I am more spiritual than religious, but I am somehow certain that he already knows.

The biggest complement I ever received as a musician was playing out live with Andy Baylor and having him compare my playing to Peter's. To even be considered in that league was a real honor, even if one that I'm still not sure I deserved. Like Peter's words of encouragement all those years ago, it really put a floor under my feet as a bass player.

I will never forget him asking me to "play something you know all the way through." His benevolent (and generous) "that's pretty close" to my fumbling through "Ramble On" gave me the green light I needed to spend even more hours with the bass guitar, and the self-confidence I needed to get on stage with "real" musicians, where I eventually grew to realize I did belong after all.

My heart goes out to Peter's friends and family...thank you for keeping this site, and Peter's music, alive.

I met Peter when he played with the Slink Rand Group. He was a great bassist. At the time, I did not play at Peters level as far as musicianship, yet he came to my home one day in Muscatine Iowa.
We jambed, talked music, had a good time . Peter was very encouraging to me , he made me feel like I was as good a musician as anyone else, I later became to feel this to...
Thankyou Peter!

While looking for old friends from Champaign, I tried to lookup Clockwork Orange and was fortunate and privilleged to find this website!! I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed both Clockwork Orange and listening to Pete when he played with Clockwork Orange back in the late 80s early 90s when I was a college student at the U of I. I am a bass player, and he definitely had an influence on my playing and style today. He was always very energetic on stage, talented and very proficient technically. I must have seen his band play about a dozen times over at Mabels and local festivals in the area. My deepest and sincere regrets on his passing. He lives on in my playing. I learned quite a bit by watching him play onstage.

My Brother...
You have no idea how much everyone misses you here in the world. I sit here listening to our music and remember the little things that happened during its creation. I miss that and I miss you.
You've been the single most influential person outside of my family that God has sent to me. Thank you again for everything you did for me. Without God, I wouldn't be who I am, but He sent you into my life to better me.
We all miss you...

Wow, your words touched my heart. I haven't met you, but already I admire your christian faith. My sister and I met your husband three years ago during christian retail show, we are from Honduras. I remember he was the only salesperson who actually asked more about our family. So, when I told him that my mom suffered a massive stroke and does not talk; he just started to cry. And since that day, he would send e-mails praying about her now and then. I will be forever grateful, as he was a different person, a true son of God.

I just hope, that I can someday even step on one of your toes, I really do admire you.

God bless you....

Mary I'm soooo glad u responded... i have been looking for peter for many years... i was shocked and saddened when i learned of his call home to the Father ... im sorry if this letter is scattered but i have so many thoughts and memories and i cant type this with a dry eye ... let me start with how we met..... i was 18 just out of high school... it was summer and a bar that i lived close to had a band outside in the parking lot... it was the reruns... peter played bass and mike husler was the singer... along with tim( drums) and mike murphy (guitar) we wernt old enough to get in but since it was in the parking lot we got in... i noticed mike and peter right away peter had such long pretty curly hair and mike had a head full of red hair... peter was living with robin at the time... she struck up a conversation with us and introduced to the band... we were all instant friends... i was 18 and weighed 300lbs... i never had a boyfriend and couldnt believe these guys were really becoming friends... one night robin wanted to give me a make over.. so i went to their apt. in champaign.. when peter heard robin telling me how much better i would look if my hair was different or my make up was different... peter walked in and said robin stop!!!! he turned to me and said....debbie dont ever let anyone tell u that u r not beautiful just the way u r.... if someone judges u on anything but ur heart then u dont need them in ur life any way... he smiled and reached out and hugged me... i cried... i felt so stupid for standing there and crying... but he was the first person who told me my heart was beautiful... he treated me like a big brother... i began driving them to the gigs because they didnt have a car... there r so many times peter and i had heart to hearts on the long drives home ... he always wanted me to know that 300lbs had nothing to do with who i was... im 46 now.... and i still hear his words in my mind... im prolly more than 300 lbs today... and when i see the looks of some people or when i over hear kids say shes so fat... i hear peter... and i smile... that was 28 years ago he told me that and its still with me... i know u of all people know how special he is but i wanted to share that story with u... he impacted a lot of peoples life through out his short walk her on earth...i travled around with them for a few years... from reruns to roadmaster..and clockwork orange i even sublet his old apt. when he moved to decature...i read all of ur blog... every word... it seems like ur love was a fairytale... a love that was meant to be...i am so thankful peter found his soul mate ... he deserved to be happy and it seems like he was happy with u... i thank GOD for u... i cant begin to to express my condolences i know words cant heal ur void... but i hope with time ur pain lessens ... i use to have tons of pictures of the old days... and when i moved about 10 yrs ago some how the box of pictures got mixed up with throw away boxes and i lost all of them... i so loved seeing the pictures on ur site... once again thank u for responding... GOD bless and take care.. debbie

i became friends with peter in the clockwork orange days. I remember a lot of times talking with peter at shows, on the phone and at his house in decatur, il.. As being a drummer he showed me a way to play to be solid, as his life was and to always be in the pocket. I listen to him with ears open and watch with much antisapation that i would become the musician he was and so dearly loved. I credit a lot of my style to him this very day.. thank you peter bailey and god bless you. sincerly TROY H.

I just heard about Pete. I was in the same band with Pete in Naperville that Mike Baumann was in. I was the drummer. Pete and I were friends before the band and hung around quite a bit. I remember his collie Blitz, his brother Dave and sister Martha. We use to read Doc Savage books and fight in his room until we put a hole in the wall and his dad got pissed. He was always happy and always rocked back and forth when he was standing. Man I have some great memories of the times we had. What a bass player.

Hi Mary:

My name is Lawrence Quick and I just wanted to say that when my brother (who wrote earlier in the guestbook) told me of Peter’s passing I couldn’t believe it. In our late teens we used to get fake id’s and get into Ted’s Warehouse in Charleston IL to see the band “Slink Rand” of which the awesome Peter Bailey played bass guitar. The band I played in “Ivory Grand” would later open up for his band Clockwork Orange at Mabels in Champaign in 1987. However, we went to see all the bands that Peter was in from time to time because he was one of our heros.

A couple of years ago my brother and I and a couple of other previous rockers followed our hearts and began playing Christian music as well as the band “IVGIVEN.” We made comment about how impressed we were that Peter Bailey was a Christian and living and singing for the Lord. The one thing I thought of when I heard of the tragedy was that I knew Peter was in Heaven.

Again, our loss and Heaven’s gain. I’ll be looking forward to jamming with him when I’m called home.

Hi Mary:

I too knew Peter and like my brother who wrote earlier was sorry and shocked to hear of his passing. When we were old enough to get fake ID's and make our way into Ted's Warehouse in Charleston IL, we went to see the Slink Rand Group and especially that awesome bass player, Pete Bailey! The last time I saw Pete was when our band Ivory Grand opened for Clockwork at Mabels in Champaign in 1987. He was as great as ever. Like my brother, we were so glad to see that Pete had recommitted to the Lord and that he was utilizing his talents for that purpose. We never know what God has planned for us so we need to always be ready in case he calls us home. I'll be looking forward to jammin with Pete someday in heaven.

Mary, I know you don't know me well since I started PICA but I have been wanting to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. After getting the news letter and looking at your website I am just blown away by your grace and I know that grace comes from God above. Reading your website and things about Peter I am just amazed at not just you but him as well and the life he lead. I know it is hard but I hope you find some comfort in knowing that he has touched so many people in his lifetime and that he will continue to use him with people he has touched. What an amazing example of God's grace and love. It is hard to loose someone and I hope you find peace knowing that he is with our heavenly father above looking down on his family in love. Love in Christ, Pam Stallings

I am so sorry to hear about this. I played with Peter in Naperville, IL in one of his first bands. We were 15 years old. We became very close friends. We kept in touch for a number of years after I moved away, and I visited him in Naperville several times (he always arranged a gig for us) and he visited me a few times in Ohio. He was an extremely talented guy and he had a huge heart. And WHAT a bass player!

April 5, 2009

I was inspired in my early days of rock & roll by Pete with Slink Rand, & Clockwork Orange. My band "Ivory Grand" opened for Clockwork at Mabels in champaign one time. Pete was the consumate professional. After playing secular music most of my life we decided it was time to use our talents for the Lord. Over the last few years I occasionally checked the net for folks I had been associated with or knew in our rock pathways. I was thrilled to see what kind of change had come to Pete & that he was ministering with his music. Last week I touched base with his web site & was shocked to see what had happened to him.
Mary I don't know you personally but I bet Angels in heaven were high fiving Peter Bailey when he arrived! God bless you eternally!

Mary,
Peter was a good man. (I am Robin's sister.) I have been reading your blog and viewed your family pictures online. You were a beautiful bride and Peter looks so happy in every picture. I am so sorry for your loss. My heart, thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I don’t know if you remember me, Mare. I met you and Peter when he played with 4n. I recall about five or so years ago my two children, Stephen and Kacie, and I shared Thanksgiving holiday with you, Peter, Bob, and Eric. I remember how Peter patiently and lovingly coached my son with his bass guitar that evening while the rest of us sat around talking.

I just found out about Peter’s passing, and I wanted to let you know that you are in my prayers. Although it is a comfort knowing where Peter is, there is still a hole in the hearts of all who knew him. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

God bless,

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I was just checking out Peter's website and read that Peter had passed. My thoughts and prayers are with you. He will live on in our hearts. I knew Peter from the late 80's/early 90's when he was with Clockwork (my exhusband was in the band also), and I was recently reunited with him at Hickory Hollow mall a few years ago, what are the chances of us to have run in to each other. Peter had such musical talent. Your pictures are nice, it is nice to see them. May God Bless you during this difficult time, it is never easy, but it does help knowing Peter is up there with the Lord. You will be in my prayers. Take Care and God Bless!

Hi. I, too, happened across this website because I'm starting a small, home based business and was looking for Christian items to use. I'm so very sorry for your loss. Pete seemed to be a wonderful, faith filled man. I'm glad you both know the Master of the sea. I'll pray for you and your family, including the doggies. I love dogs so much - it must be hard for them, too. I pray that as time moves on, the legacy this man has left behind will forever be remembered and will still be an ongoing outreach! May God bless you all.

Peter is, was, and will always be a marvelous talent. One of the best bass players I have had the pleasure to work with, a marvelous harmony singer, but much more than that - a man of God. Thank you Mary for the lovely email and my prayers are with you and the extended family. I'm guessing Peter's jamming in heaven right now!

It was wonderful to go back in time and see all the things Pete has done since we were all young players in Naperville. I'm really grateful we got to know each other again in Nashville - I'd hoped we would meet again. Such a great musician, and stellar human being. One of the big surprises for me, in 2003, was that Pete was singing! And really well, too. I always remember Pete, with his signature rocking back and forth on his heels motion as he played the bass. So cool and soulful. He will be missed. My heart goes out to you. Wiht Love,

Pete,
I will miss you. I can remember all those great musical bass notes and vocals you layed down in my basement in early '70's. Phoenix, Safat, Mars.
Such influential days for me. And when you were done with rehearsal, and came upstairs to leave, you were so kind and thoughtful with your words when we might get a chance to talk. Thank you for your Great example Pete, Keep picking those Great Love notes, Kevin

Hi! I happened upon this website looking for a place to sell my husband's Christian art. I saw a link to see Peter's story written so beautifully by his wife. This has touched my heart. Such a young looking man! How do people who loose loved ones who are not saved ever cope I wander. My Dad went to be the the Lord after some really gruesome suffering from brain tumours. Knowing he was saved has been my only comfort! I would like to encourage you Mary to hold this precious knowledge and gift close to your heart, and know that this life is just a vapour, and all of us who are so blessed to be saved, will oneday soon have a BIG reunion, never to be parted again!

Peter and I played together in "Roadmaster" I was the lead singer of the band and knew him in the "B.J." days. I've also come to know Papa for the last 19 years and continue to serve Him in my music ministries here in Indianapolis. He was a great bass player and remember with much joy the times we had jammin. I have had a hard time with this. I know as a Christian that I should take comfort in the fact that you are with the Father, but I am still in shock. I still expect you to call me every Monday with office updates and product info. I expect to answer the phone and hear you say "hey, kid". I look around and see YOU in my posters and DVDs. On the way to church last week, I saw 2 different people that looked like you.

I hear songs...I remember funny moments. And then I see you in that hospital room...and I am thankful your spirit was already with God by then. I miss you, my brother. I miss you a lot. And I cannot wait to sing with you again.

I'm still playing bass (bought me an Alembic & a John Gray bass - like yours) and practicing those scales you taught me. I knew I wanted to be a musician after seeing you in the Slink Rand band at the Tuscola Community Center on Thanksgiving night. Thanks for all the lessons!

Love the site....anything new?
BTW--the routine at the dance studio was a hit....the hula hoops did the trick...everyone love it. They all asked about the song--I told them where to go....should have posted something sooner.

Have a great one.

Nice site. It made me reminisce about our days together in the "Reruns". I'm sure yours is an exciting ministry.
